post Vintage Inspiration

June 4th, 2008

Filed under: Misc — Bec @ 11:41 pm

Sparked by a post over at Tabitha Emma I’ve created a flickr mosaic of yummy vintage things that I’d love to have in my house to inspire me every day.

Often when we talk about inspiration for paper crafters we’re looking at eye-candy of other papery creations that people have made. Sometimes rather than specific inspiration fora project you just need to surround yourself with images and things that just get you into that creative zone, the relaxed, dreamy place that your mind wanders off to when you’re focusing on things that delight you.

So, here’s 9 things that would delight me.

Mosaic - Vintage
1. Vintage Filing Cabinet, 2. Untitled, 3. Beautiful Old Globe, 4. Feet, 5. Oh, the things I’ve heard!, 6. Type Case, 7. Metal Letters, 8. More Numbers, 9. the gramaphone

Feel free to post your own list in the comments, or link to your blog.

post Just Arrived - May 1st

April 30th, 2008

Filed under: Store Updates — Bec @ 5:33 pm

We’ve had a couple of orders arrive in the last few days and they’re now all unpacked and on the shelves.

Here’s a quick list of just some of the goodies new in store this week.

  • Watercolour pencils in two brands and in different sized packs- Adel is a standard quality range for experimenting, kids projects, stampers, cardmaking etc. Prismacolour is a professional, artist quality range that is suitable for scrapbooking, art journalling and anyone who takes their art a bit more seriously. The prismacolour range coordinates with other prismacolour products.
  • Glaze Paste - a thick paste similar to a PVA glue which is formulated to stick, seal, glaze and provide extra body when working with paper. Ideal for decoupage and collage. Lorri uses this to seal her image transfers.
    Mini Canvas
    • Mini Canvases - These mini canvasses are adorable! In three sizes [4×6cm, 5×7cm and 6×8cm] they are perfect to use as bases for miniature works of art, mini canvas-books, name banners etc. Or stick them to larger canvases to add height and dimension to larger pieces.

    • Mini Easels - The ultimate showcase for those mini works of art. Display your favourite ATC, mini canvas or card. 12cm.
    • Pinata Alcohol Inks - We’ve topped up our colours and now have the complete range in stock - Pinata alcohol inks are bright and vibrant colours which blend beautifully.
    • Kaiser Mini Heart Albums - Shaped and drilled wooden hearts (5 to a pack) to make your own mini album. Just add binding rings or ribbon to bind.
    • Kaiser Clear Stamps - Fantastic new range of clear stamps for scrapbookers or cardmakers. Modern frame and flower designs to use with your own acrylic blocks or Kaiser’s new clear stamper handle.
    • Kaiser Mini Wings Albums - Who doesn’t love things with wings? These mini albums are the perfect size to turn into photo brag books of your little angels.
    • Kaiser Designer and Freestyle Albums - This freestyle albums are a little out of the ordinary and great fun to work with. Pages of different shapes and sizes can be configured any way you like to create a masterpiece all of your own.
    • DIY Keyrings - Clear acrylic keyrings in heart, rectangle or circle shapes - just add a photo or your favourite patterned paper for an easy and quick Mother’s Day (or any-day!) gift.

On the way - new products from Darkroom Door, MiJeMoo and others coming soon.

  • post Ribbon Storage Box - Kaiser

    April 30th, 2008

Filed under: Projects — Bec @ 4:40 pm

Ribbon BoxOne of the best ways to ‘use up’ your stash is to have it visible.
That’s where storage solutions like this Kaiser ribbon box really shine.

While the box itself is only small and wouldn’t ever be able to hold my entire ribbon stash, I really like the idea of having a selection of ribbons close at hand - either in the colours your most attracted to for the moment, or the odds and ends you want to use up.

The flip top lid opens fully (or not quite fully, depending on how much you embellish the top) so that it’s easy to get into. Mini spools will fit nicely, but personally I think this box is best for cut lengths of ribbon and leftover scraps.

Ribbon Box The decorated box pictured was made using the Vagabond range of papers and coordinating pearl embellishments from Kaiser, chipboard letters by Bella and Maya Road, paper blossoms, a dash of Jo Sonja paint (french blue) and Matisse Polymer Gloss Varnish.

This one was glued together before I started working on it, but I think it would be easier to cover your surfaces first, especially if you want to decorate inside of the box too.

Kaiser recommend that you lightly sand the wood surface before painting it. If you’re planning to only paint the edges and cover the flat surfaces with paper I tend to skip this first step. Instead, I stick on the paper, and then sand the edges of the paper and the wood at the same time - which saves doing everything twice and makes for a nice clean edge. After sanding, wipe over the whole piece with a babywipe or damp cloth - this gets rid of any residue so that you can add paint or gloss easily and smoothly.
    Flower
The plain chipboard letters were covered with coordinating paper using PVA glue and the edges were sanded off for a smooth finish. Then they were embellished with the self adhesive pearls in different sizes. The floral embellishment was made using a large pearl as the centre, surrounded by the tiny pearls. This gave more impact as the single pearl looked a little bit lost at the centre of the large flower.

If you prefer a bit more bling, you could also use Kaiser’s adhesive rhinestones to embellish instead of the pearls - or a combination of the two. There’s a huge range of colours in both the rhinestones and the pearls and they’re so easy to use that I have to restrain myself from adding them to EVERYTHING. The adhesive is surprisingly strong - my mobile phone and eftpos machine are both covered in the rhinestones and are holding up quite well.

Here’s a picture of the completed ribbon box, which is on display in the shop if you’d like a closer look. It looks like I’ll have to make myself another one if I want to take one home with me!

    Ribbon Box

If you have decorated one of these boxes, or have another off the page project you’d like to share using any of the Kaiser range, comment below with a link to your blog or send us an email. I’ll post more off-the-page projects and storage ideas in the next few weeks.

    Have a creative day,
    - Bec

    post Link Roundup - Coredinations

    April 23rd, 2008

Filed under: Misc — Bec @ 1:51 pm

Lots of bloggers have been experimenting with the new Coredinations cardstock. I thought I’d post a few links here for you to get inspired by.

    Mill Lane Studios - Coredinations
Myléne Hillam of Mill Lane Studio tried the Black Magic with a cuttlebug texture folder.

Pearl of Maisymary tried a pink core black magic with a cuttlebug folder and selected which areas to sand.

Inkyheart posted a scrapbooking layout using coredinations with a die-cutting machine.

Gayle Bowden opted to ‘keep’ the coredinations as is and did a lovely layout with paper blossoms.

Ally posted this layout which uses the Vintage ‘pre-distressed’ paper.

The Mystical Scrapbooks DT have some layouts using coredinations too. Both used as a regular cardstock, and showing off great torn edges.

Jackie has posted an embossed floral card using one of the black magic ’spellcaster’ pack.

KellyG has been playing with so much coredinations that I don’t know what to link to! You’ll have to head over to her blog to see what she’s been up to.

Our top-ups of the black magic packs arrived a few minutes ago and haven’t even hit the shelves yet. They’ll disappear quick, so if you want to try this fantastic stuff for yourself, I’ll see you soon!

post ATC exhibition and trading day TODAY

    April 20th, 2008

Filed under: Misc — Bec @ 12:22 pm

We’re all set up and the doors are open for our ATC exhibition and trading day.

There’s well over 500 cards on display, and that’s not even counting the trading folders.

We’ve got a demo table where we’ll be showing people how to do the polymer image transfers and use the cuttlebug and bigshot machines.

There’s a play table where you can try a transfer yourself after watching Lorri’s demo.

The ATC kits, collage packs, german scrap mini-packs and other limited edition kits are making their debut. And the store is open too, with fantastic specials on papers, embellishments, inks, stamps… actually I don’t think there’s anything that’s not on sale!

Even if you’re not into ATCs, or have no idea what all the fuss is about, come down, grab a bargain and say hello.

We’d love to see you today!

post Gravatars - Put a face to a name

    April 17th, 2008

Filed under: Misc — Bec @ 2:52 pm

You may have noticed that some comments have pictures next to them.
(See my comment on this post as an example)

This is done using a nifty little thing called ‘Gravatars’.

You can get one yourself for free by signing up here and uploading your picture. The best thing of all is that once you’ve signed up, you don’t have to do anything else! These little pictures are avatars that follow you around the web as you comment on blogs. They’re linked to your email address, and so they’ll automatically show up anytime you use that address to post a comment (on a blog with gravatar functionality activated). Nifty huh?
